Case Study

Heating Plant Design Build

Challenge:

A public sector higher education client needed to renovate and add on to their already existing heating plant to provide a reliable, economical, and sustainable central heating facility for its campus. The client also needed the new construction to be delivered using the design-build method.

Solution:

Valdes partnered with other engineering firms utilizing previously prepared bridging documents to generate construction documents for the contractor. Since the heating plant was operational, these documents needed to deliver a phased implementation of new boilers and related equipment. They also needed to include various improvements and connections to existing campus infrastructure as well as consideration for LEED Silver certification.

Impact:

Valdes worked with its partners to deliver a design that responded to the client’s current and future needs. Major design features include the following elements:

  • Demolition/modification of existing buildings to accommodate new construction.
  • New office, training/conference, and locker room facilities
  • New addition to the existing West Plant
  • Two new 75,000 pph boilers
  • Interconnection between East and West Plants
  • Substation modifications
  • Combined heat and power planning for future installation
