Valdes Engineering Company was selected to design a blowdown gas recovery system that had previously vented to the plant's flare system. The recovery system captures the blowdown gas, and then compresses and conditions the gas for use in the plant's fuel gas system. The project's objective was to reduce the plant's fuel consumption and obtain environmental credits.
The project consisted of an amine absorber to remove H2S, water-cooled and air cooled heat exchangers, liquid ring compressor, pressure vessels, API pumps, a knockout drum and appurtenances. A larger capacity liquid ring compressor was installed at Valdes' recommendation, the first compressor of this size (largest in the world) utilized in this service. This compressor design became the standard at other plants' for this client.
Valdes provided complete detailed engineering services, including the preparation and finalization of equipment specifications, bid evaluations, vendor interface, project management, process engineering, mechanical engineering, piping and plant layout, civil/structural design, instrumentation, electrical engineering, and construction management.
